Cuba and Vietnam: Standing Shoulder to Shoulder In Adversity

Cuba has a history of international solidarity, including sending doctors around the globe and training doctors in its International School of Medicine. On Saturday 15 November, marking 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, we recognise Cuba and Vietnam’s history of standing shoulder to shoulder in adversity.

Cuba gave support to Vietnam during the war during the Vietnam War, which ended 50 years ago, by giving political and direct military support and solidarity, and vital non-military economic and technical aid, forming a long-term relationship based on mutual kindness and solidarity.

Now, during Cuba’s own time of crisis, Vietnam are offering Cuba economic cooperation, knowledge sharing, and diplomatic support, and exports including rice, seafood and shoes.

On Saturday 15 November at CCA, we will explore how visionary filmmaker Santiago Alvarez was instrumental in documenting the struggle of Vietnamese people fighting an imperialist war through his two films, 79 Springs and Hanoi Tuesday 13th.

Santiago’s son, Osain, will be joining us to discuss his father’s time in Vietnam, and to screen his film The Eyes of Santiago which retraces his father’s steps.

We will present the film Archival Cuban Newsreels restored by the Vietnamese Institute, and have lots of opportunities for discussion.

In collaboration with the Vietnamese Embassy, we’ll also be bringing the powerful Vietnamese film The Story of Kindness or How to Behave, as well as music, food and revolutionary Vietnamese posters to Glasgow audiences.
