In 18th-century Cuba, a clueless count wants to bring the light of religion into the lives of his slaves. And he can think of no better way to share the power of Christianity than to involve them in a staging of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. After picking twelve of his slaves to serve as disciples, the count arranges them around the dinner table for a rather odd exchange of ideas. He considers the night a success –  until his slaves stage an uprising on Good Friday.

Conversation with Mirta Ibarra

Mirta Ibarra & Tomás Gutiérrez Alea

A unique opportunity to spend time with actor Mirta Ibarra – a hugely entertaining speaker – as she shares stories of working and living with filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea – one of the most iconic Cuban filmmakers of all time.

Her talk includes a screening of Abrazos (Los Van Van latest video by Alejandro Valera) – a homage to the legendary film Strawberry and Chocolate, in which she stars.

Content Advisory Notes:

The Last Supper contains complex themes of religious hypocrisy, colonialism, and slave rebellion. It includes scenes of historical violence and psychological intensity.
